University College of Science Shankar AWKUM offers admissions in Under- Graduate Programmes in Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology, leading to Graduate Programmes in all the aforementioned disciplines, moredisciplines to be added with the passage of time. Prof Dr. lhsan Ali, Vice Chancellor, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan and Principal University College of Science Shankar AWKUM in Joint collaboration envisaged the Idea of the UCS and was applauded by the Faculty and Administration of AWKUM.
Subsequent to the decision to establish University College of Science Shankar, in a year-long careful planning, country's technological needs were identified reviewed international trends, took stock of our resources, our challenges, and built a strong support network of educators, researchers and corporate leaders. It is realized by every-one why it should be done.
Aims and Objectives
As a matter of fact, our country continued to lose talent, our industry remained technologically dependent and our Universities remained intellectually barren in the recent past. Almost exclusively, our Industrial manufactures are licensed by foreign companies. To survive industrially and compete globally, we need to start producing high -valued products and services. This requires scientists who are technically competent, innovative, entrepreneurial, have leadership qualities and broad problem -solving- skills. Our existing universities are not equipped enough to meet the challenge. Their graduates are narrowly specialized and are unable to create knowledge at the boundary between multiple disciplines, increasing the domain of true technological breakthrough. Further, they have ineffective linkages with Industry, an acute shortage of qualified faculty and no internal faculty pipelines, to sustain academic or corporate entities. If we are to compete internationally, we need to produce a cadre of scientists who will not only develop technologies suitable for local conditions but also to create and provide entirely new economic and social opportunities to the Nation.
We envision University College of Science, Shankar, AWKUM as the vanguard of a new class of Institution, a successful research university model for the region in general and Pakistan in particular.
The Plan and Status
The University College of Science, Shankar, AWKUM started undergraduate classes in fall 2009 with 450 high school students selected from 2500 applicants, with an option to major in one of the six BS programmes i.e Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology.
University College of Science, Shankar, AWKUM is housed in a 12.5-Acre complex with state-of-the-art research laboratories. Currently we have full-fledged working laboratories in Bioinformatics, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. The video lecture facility is also available. The college has about 100 faculty members out of them 26 have PhD Degrees and plans to hire an additional 60 faculty members, in the next phase. To attract the best faculty members and allow them to do quality research, a start-up research grant is provided to the faculty.
University College of Science, Shankar AWKUM has not yet started functioning, but the - story tells as If it is one year old. The Impact we strongly believe that this initiative will change the face of education in Pakistan. Through its world-class science graduates and high quality research relevant to Industry, it will catalyze genuine industrial development in Pakistan.
We believe that originality and creativity is better than technological skill and we are striving hard to achieve the target. Let us join hands together and make all out efforts to pave the path leading towards success.
